The Power of Positivity

Do me a favor and think of the last time that you were energized and motivated while talking with someone who had a horribly bad attitude. When they’ve turned every compliment, provocation, or story into a pessimistic vociferation, do you feel an ounce of desire to continue speaking with them? In my experience, this is the easiest way to dissuade someone from building a relationship with you. So, in the relationship-driven profession that we’ve chosen where every call could be a game-changer, the importance of keeping a positive attitude can’t be overstated. It’s not just about having a perpetual smile on your face; it’s about unlocking a whole set of superpowers that can transform your team, your relationships with clients, and, ultimately, your bottom line.

The Positivity Puzzle

No need to sugarcoat it, sales can be a rollercoaster. There are the highs of closing deals and the lows of facing rejection after working on the deal for months on end. It’s in this emotional whirlwind that a positive attitude becomes the only way to keep you and your team moving forward. When you radiate positivity, your team can’t help but catch the vibe. It’s like a motivational domino effect – one positive leader can spark a chain reaction that propels the entire team forward.

But it’s not just about pumping everyone up with motivational quotes. Positivity is your resilience booster. You need to remember the realities of this business and use a “can-do” attitude to help you bounce back from the inevitable setbacks. In the world of sales, where rejection is as common as morning coffee, a positive mindset becomes your armor, shielding you from the negativity that can drag you down and drive you crazy.

The Customer Connection

I hinted at this point in the beginning but ask yourself sincerely if you believe a customer will be excited about the prospect of buying your product or service if you come in with a negative attitude. When you’re in meetings with customers, your positive attitude isn’t just a personal perk – it’s your secret weapon for building rapport. Clients can sense positivity through the phone lines and through your body language. Positivity creates an atmosphere of trust and openness, making them more comfortable and relaxed while doing business with you. After all, who wouldn’t want to work with someone who radiates good vibes?

Cracking the Creativity Code

Sales is as much about problem-solving as it is about persuasion. When you approach challenges with a positive mindset, you tap into a wellspring of creativity. Suddenly, obstacles become opportunities, and your team starts to see solutions where others see roadblocks. It’s the positive spin that turns problems into projects and setbacks into steppingstones.

I learned this lesson the hard way in my first job as a Business Development Rep (BDR) at a mid-sized expense management services firm. If you don’t know, the job of a BDR is to do the cold-calling to prospective clients – it’s the most emotionally draining job I’ve ever done. The lesson I learned here was that if I picked up the phone with even the slightest amount of negativity on my brain, the call was going to be a failure before the prospect even picked up. When I started, I dreaded having to talk to prospects and hoped for voicemails, so when prospects did pick up, I was caught by surprise and unmotivated, and my prospects could tell. I quickly realized this mindset was unsustainable. The funny thing is, when I changed my mindset, all of a sudden, my luck changed with it and I started having consistent success on the phone.

Now, it’s obviously not a perfect science, but do not underestimate the power of positivity in your playbook. It’s not just a fluffy concept; it truly can be a game-changer when done seriously. It transforms you and your team into a powerhouse, enhances client relationships, and turns challenges into triumphs. As you navigate the dynamic world of sales, let positivity be your guiding star – your not-so-secret sauce for success. After all, a positive attitude doesn’t just open doors; it kicks them wide open!
